So, what causes anxiety attacks specifically? There is absolutely no singular reason. Everyone is one of a kind and different. One person could be shoved over the edge by delivering a speech. One more may be forced over the line by talking to clients on the phone. What causes anxiety attacks could vary from one person to the next.

There are a couple of common reasons for anxiety attacks, even so:

* Phobias – If someone suffers from a trauma in some fashion,they may experience a panic attack when they experience the same circumstance. “Trauma” is an extremely loose term here. Adults, teens and children who suffer from the disorder have very similar symptoms. Many teen sufferers of panic attacks report that they feel as if they are dreaming or sleepwalking during the attack. They do not feel that anything occurring at the moment is actually real.

Many teens and child sufferers often have issues with depression, develop substance abuse problems and also are reported to have suicidal thoughts. Many young people experiencing panic disorder are not fully aware of what is happening and why it is happening, while most adults know when they are having a panic attack. This is the major difference between an adult and a child sufferer.

Becoming educated about panic attacks is the first step to overcoming this disorder. It is also important to have a group of people with whom you can gain support and encouragement from. People with excessive alcohol consumption also tend to be undernourished due to an imbalanced diet and also because alcohol tends to flush out certain essential nutrients from the body. The nutrients, mainly vitamins and minerals, are important as they act as co-factors in the production of neurotransmitters.

All of the above factors act in tandem in disrupting ones moods resulting in an individual being prone to anxiety and anxiety attacks. In addition, the effects of alcohol withdrawal may also mimic anxiety attacks.

So what can you do if you are suffering from anxiety? The most logical thing would be to avoid or reduce alcohol consumption. An individual must exert sufficient self control in order to control his/her drinking habits. It is also important to ensure that one is obtaining adequate nutrition as this will help avoid deficiencies of vitamins and minerals. A well balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables will help to address this issue. Supplemental vitamins C and B complex and magnesium should be consumed if one insists on continuing to drink. 1. Phobias. A person, if exposed to something that they’re afraid of, will naturally have an anxiety attack. An example would be if you’re scared of public speaking.

2. Hyperventilation syndrome. This is another cause of anxiety. Hyperventilation syndrome is triggered when you breath through your mouth. When you do this for a very long time, your heart rate increases, which triggers lightheadedness. And eventually it will trigger an anxiety attack.

3. Medications. Using antidepressants excessively, you could be triggering an anxiety attack. Taking too many antidepressant pills has side effects. And that side effect is an anxiety attack. Try not to take a lot of antidepressant drugs.

4. Heredity. If one of your family members has a history of anxiety attacks or panic attacks, there’s a chance that you will have this disorder as well.

5. Short term causes. When something dramatic happens in your life, such as someone close to you dying, it could trigger an anxiety attack. If you’re having emotional problems, make sure you don’t intake too much caffeine. It could cause you to have an anxiety attack.

6. Environment. Another cause of anxiety attacks is due to the environment. It could be from the humid or hot atmosphere. Or it could be from you being around too many people. Some people can’t handle being around a lot of people for long period of time.

These are some causes of anxiety attacks. If you have these signs, you need to do something about it. Waiting to stop your anxiety attack could be fatal.

Just another quick word about the fight or flight response. A few thousand years ago, our ancestors, people like the hunter-gatherers and Neanderthals, needed their fight or flight responses all the time. They never knew what was around the next corner or in the cave that looked so inviting for the night. They were always on the lookout for danger.

Nowadays, we don’t need it to anything like the same extent, unless we’re in an occupation that’s dangerous on a daily basis; a policeman, firefighter, active member of the armed forces, etc. So why do I need my fight or flight response is a perfectly valid question, most especially when asked by someone who’s just suffered an Anxiety Attack.

Unfortunately for the poor people who are subject to such conditions, the old fight or flight is still very necessary. As we’ve seen, when it’s activated, adrenaline and cortisol are released. The heart rate speeds up and blood is pumped to the major muscle groups. When the fight or flight switch, or as we’ll put it, F/F, is turned on, we’re very highly strung.

Concentration’s difficult to impossible, because the mind has been trained to seek out all possible dangers and threats that may be pitted against us. We’ve seen too that when it doesn’t find any, it takes a considerable length of time to turn itself off. During that period, the time between the actual Anxiety Attack and the F/F actually switching off, we experience a period of anxiety.

Concentration’s still very difficult, because we have that ‘looking over the shoulder’ feeling all the time. It does appear that there are reasons for these attacks, in the workplace especially, (quite apart from wanting to cause your boss physical discomfort!).

Scientists have found that the artificial light given out from computers and televisions can trigger attacks or make them worse, particularly if the worker is tired. If you find you have to work in front of a computer for long hours, then make certain you rest at regular intervals. If at all possible, go outside into the fresh air, but at least leave your chair and have a walk around.

Another very difficult situation is when you’re in a gathering and you feel an attack coming on. However, you know it’s going to be extremely difficult to leave too from a social standpoint. Something like this can cause your Anxiety to go through the roof. Personally, I don’t think you have any alternative but to leave. Staying will probably make you genuinely ill, what with the attack and the pressure of the occasion, so I feel it would be less embarrassing to leave.

I know it’s one of those situations that put you between a rock and a hard place, but unfortunately there’s no middle ground
